It Is Finally Spring!
Despite my enthusiastic title, it is still pretty chilly in Provincetown. This past weekend the windchill was in the low 20s at times. So we’re not quite on the beach yet, but going to the beach (and not in a Winter-hiking-kind-of way) actually feels like a real possibility, which is amazing.
The other morning I was running down Bradford Street Extension, heading toward Province Lands Road. I could actually see green coming in to view on the Moors. Until recently they were just a mess of brown–sand, muck, dead cordgrass, etc. But now, the new cordgrass is slowly poking through the earth, and the green hue is very real.
Seeing that green gave me a boost of energy that fueled all seven of my miles that morning.
All this month I’ve seen similar sights–and felt similar boosts–around Provincetown. Flowering trees have been slowly budding and opening, almost imperceptibly. The tulips, which were starting to reach through the dirt once the February blizzard’s snow melted, have finally started to open (especially the ones that get a lot of sun). The trees now have buds that are visible, which is nice to see even if they won’t be full and open until mid-May or so.
And there are other signs of Spring (and Summer!) around town. The first Dolphin whalewatch boat has returned to the harbor. The ice cream shops are opening (and yes I’ve had some already, even though it was freezing outside), as is the Lobster Pot. And Spiritus is open seven-days per week. Commercial Street was downright busy this past weekend–I think Halloween was the last time we saw so many visitors.
Not too long ago (probably in between the two really big snowstorms of late January and late February), it felt as if this place was never warm or bright with color–that it was all a dream. But we are slowly building toward that reality, and I’m so very glad.
And ready for it!
