Summer's Fits and Starts
I lived in DC for most of the time from late 1997 through mid 2019. During that time, I got used to Summer starting in early April and being in full swing by late May. Most years by then there was lots of heat and humidity, and plenty of thunderstorms to clear the gutters.
Provincetown is…different. From mid-May through June we can have sunny and hot days but also very chilly, rainy, and foggy stretches. Sometimes a single day will start off one season and end with another.
Today, for example, started incredibly foggy–the visibility was maybe 1/10 of a mile, which is gorgeous and spooky. But the temperature was cool and the air was obviously very damp. By late morning the sun was out, the clouds and fog long gone, and it felt like Summer was in full swing.
The first time I visited Provincetown in late May, I packed mostly shorts and t-shirts. I remember buying sweatshirts and winter running gear on that trip, given that the temperatures stayed mostly in the mid-40s, with a brutal breeze out of the east, coming in straight off the cold Atlantic. Lesson learned! After six years living here full time, I now know not to pack my winter hats away until we get through July 4th.
But beauty still abounds here, no matter what’s happening with the weather.
Here are a few of my favorite photos from the past several weeks, including some shots of the Strawberry Moon rising over Provincetown Harbor on June 11. The photos don’t do it justice–it was a stunning pink orb that made many of us stop and contemplate the awesomeness of nature and space. It was good stuff in a world with too much bad.
Be well, and enjoy what’s good!
