Growth - Fast and Slow
I never intended to become a photographer. I even hesitate to think of myself as a photographer, which is crazy since I’ve taken thousands of photos over the past six years–plus I’ve sold 100s of pieces to buyers, had many images in our great local newspaper, and have had a photo or nine hanging in various shows around Provincetown.
But there are still days when I think my work is meh at best. These are usually times when I’m trying to figure out something new in my practice, or I’m just particularly stuck. Or–not surprising–I am super busy with my other work (Coaching and consulting within the realm of progressive politics, philanthropy, and policy! A super fun field right about now!).
Lately it’s been “all of the above” for me on those fronts, hence the imposter syndrome (for lack of a better word). And I’ve been especially grateful for my Provincetown Photographers Collective these past few weeks, as they support and push me in the best ways possible. True gems, they are!
Perhaps those three paragraphs sound like digital throat-clearing before I get to this month’s post and photos. BUT they represent what this month has been like! Going out to shoot lately has felt like a real chore (for all the reasons listed in the throat-clearing paragraphs), but once I get out there it all feels like magic.
As I type this, we are on day five of a real summery stretch. Lots of sun, temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s, humidity, and even a thunderstorm or two. Which means things are really growing, finally. It’s amazing to see what changes week to week. I’m especially heartened when I see some of our perennials starting to poke through the dirt.
These green shoots feel like a miracle after the Winter we had.
And because it’s not officially (tourist/Summer) season yet, town is still blissfully manageable. It’s definitely getting crowded, and by the time I post this Memorial Day will have come and gone, and we’ll be in full swing.
But for right now, there is enough time and space to see a magnificent comeback happening in real time, day by day.
