Missing the Magic

We have been away from Provincetown for about three weeks, and have another five days to go. A series of events related to our families, friends, and work have us on the road for most of October. And although those events have all been wonderful and fun in their own way, I am ready to be home.

For one thing, I am a creature of habit. I like my routines and, as someone who is nearly 50, I do not apologize for this fact!

For another, I do not feel very creative when I am away from Provincetown. I have SO many photos to edit (thousands at this point!), but I have no desire to do so while away. I can’t tap into that energy/flow/state that helps me see, understand, and craft my work. Even posting on Instagram has felt like a chore this month, which is rarely the case (and obviously not a big lift).

Creativity is a core part of who I am at this point, so I really miss when that feeling is absent. When I’m home in Provincetown it is an easy and natural part of me and my daily life.

And I know that I’m not unique in experiencing this feeling, given Provincetown’s history as an art colony–and generally a place where many people feel creative and free. My friend (and artist) Gaston Lacombe recently started a podcast highlighting and digging into the town’s artistic history.

There is just something about the place–its varied and long history, the light, the weather, the natural and architectural scenery, the quirky and colorful people–that makes many of us want to create and connect.

Which is all to say I am in good company, as someone who is contributing a tiny bit to this massive creative history and legacy. And the time away from this energy–whatever its source–makes me appreciate it that much more.

That’s my positive spin on being creatively homesick!

To tide me–and you–over until I’m home in five days and back out and about with my camera, here are some of my favorite shots from late Summer and early Fall.

Enjoy and be well!
