Remembering the Beauty
My current photography practice was born in the chaos and hardships of 2020. I used my iPhone–and then my first real camera, a Canon Rebel–to escape from screens and their endless news of the pandemic, that year’s election, and the related swirl of upheaval that dominated our lives.
Photography for me since that time has been about getting outside, noticing what is interesting or beautiful or fleeting, and capturing an image of those interesting, beautiful, and/or fleeting things. It’s also to memorialize the feeling I have when I notice something that falls into those categories. When I edit my work, I really try to infuse a final product with that feeling (or feelings).
This past year–and especially this past month or so–has had me doubling down on this search for things that make me feel something that transcends the news or politics. Lately, I’ve found myself drawn to my favorite places in town–the Moors, the breakwater/jetty in the West End, Captain Jack’s, MacMillan Pier–and especially in the first and last minutes of light of the day.
The escape that these places and times have provided to me have done immeasurably good things for my soul and psyche, and I hope the resulting photos express this reality–and help you feel something good, too.
Sometimes it is really as simple as that.
And happy Thanksgiving, if you are celebrating! Be well.
